Sales Training Tips:

Business Sales Training - Every Sales Manager is a Sales Trainer

As a sales manager you are responsible for the production of your sales representatives. Therefore, it is important that you are prepared and capable to provide business sales training for your people. Your representatives need to be properly trained to be effective in the field. Providing sales training for your team will allow you to bridge performance gaps and have a stronger, higher producing sales organization.

After all, who knows better as to what type of sales training your team needs than you? You are the sales manager so you should know the strengths and limitations of your sales professionals. With that knowledge, you can customize business sales training that addresses the needs of each of the members on your team.

For example, many professionals in sales struggle because they lack the appropriate attitudes and habits of a successful sales person. As the sales manager, you may need to create a new culture for your team so they will look at sales from a different prospective.

The sales manager of a large financial services organization created a personal development reading program that consisted of having his sales team read personal development books. Within 60 days of starting the reading program, the sales numbers of the organization almost tripled.

This is the type of difference a simple change in mindset or habits can make in a sales organization. Of course, there may be other reasons why your sales team may not be performing the way you think they should as well. This is why you as a sales manager need to be prepared to put on the sales trainer hat. Help your team by giving them the tools, strategies, and techniques necessary to improve their sales performance.

Just like any good trainer you have to identify what the challenges are first before recommending any specific sales training solution. This may require going out into the field and making sales calls with your representatives.

For example, your sales representatives may be doing a bad job at pre-qualifying a prospect. They get a lot of appointments but make very few sales. You may not know this until you go out in the field and see that they are meeting with people who are not qualified to buy your product or service. Seeing this for yourself makes it easier for you to recommend a training solution on how to pre-qualify prospects.

The training solution could be one or two minor tweaks to the sales process that can make a dramatic difference. You might have a representative that continues to sell after the client has already indicated that they are ready to buy. As an experienced sales professional, you know that you can talk your way right out of a sale if you are not careful. Making the minor tweak of asking for the business and being quiet could provide a major return.

As a sales manager, it is important that you are prepared to be a sales trainer when necessary. You want to make sure you are able to provide the appropriate business sales training for your team. Doing this will dramatically increase your team's performance.
