About the Knights of Columbus

Founded in the United States in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, the Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization.

The Territorial District of the Knights of Columbus on the prairies was established in 1906. The first Grand Knight of the Council, Thomas D. Deegan, became the Territorial Deputy, a post he held until the formation of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan State Jurisdiction in 1909. The split in the Western area came in 1907, when Alberta became part of the organization.

The Alberta State Chapter of the Knights of Columbus incorporated a charitable Foundation, the ACF, in 1980 as a separate legal society or entity under the Alberta Societies Act and as a registered charitable organization in Canada. The ACF has accumulated in excess of $1.4 million dollars in its investment fund and has paid out over $1.7 million dollars to various charities.
